Shahid Afridi has regained captaincy of T20 team of Pakistan replacing Muhammad Hafeez. This is the best opportunity for Shahid Afridi to work hard on his game and his players and prepare them for the upcoming World T20 event that is going to take place in 2016.
He can retire after winning the T20 world cup for the nation and make us all proud. Not to mention that he will be proud of himself as well because he will be the only captain after Younis Khan who helped Pakistan win T20 world cup.
Young cricketers like Sohaib Maqsood and Fawad Alam were also reported on various occasions to be contenders for the post but PCB opted for an experienced player like Shahid Afridi. Shahid Afridi previously expressed his desire for becoming the captain and he ended up being penalized on making comments on the issue.
Shahid Afridi lost his ODI and T20 captaincy back in 2011 when the team returned from the West Indies tour. He had developed differences with head coach Waqar Younis and PCB chairman Ijaz Butt. He gave hard statements against PCB and was served legal notice. In addition the captaincy was taken from him and given to Misbah.
Hafeez replaced Misbah as captain in T20 but he could not deliver in World T20 and he stepped down back in April 2014. There were no T20 cricket activities for Pakistan on calendar since then, so PCB was taking its time to decide who will be the next captain of Pakistan T20 team.
Finally Pakistan will be facing Australia and New Zealand soon and T20 matches are scheduled so it was time to appoint a new T20 captain. PCB did not have much choice and Shahid Afridi earned his place in T20 team as captain.
Another reason Shahid Afridi is the best choice is that Misbah ul Haq is considered a defensive captain and T20 cricket does not suit a captain like him. Shahid Afridi is aggressive and this is what T20 cricket is about.
I will develop a fearless approach in the players and eradicate the fear of loss as a captain. This format is not for the chicken-hearted player.
There is another good side for Afridi becoming T20 captain. If he performs well in T20 cricket with the team and Misbah fails to perform as captain of ODI team, there might be a slight chance of Afridi taking over ODI team captaincy back from Misbah ul Haq.
This is a big test not only for Shahid Afridi but Misbah ul Haq as well. Afridi is one of the most popular cricket all-rounders not only in Pakistan but globally as well. He proved himself a good captain but he did not go well along with the senior officials at PCB. Once again, the wind is blowing in favor of Afridi and its time for him to perform well as captain and once again he could be the one in-charge of ODI team as well with the help of a bit of luck.
